Sorprendentemente no supe de la existencia de Paul Roland hasta hace relativamente poco. Y eso siendo fan de Robyn Hitchcock, el artista contemporáneo de Paul con el que se suelen hacer la mayoría de comparaciones. Paul Roland en cierto modo recuerda a Robyn, sobre todo en su fascinación por la Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett y el folk más oscuro y primitivo. Pero hay notables diferencias. Para empezar el estilo musical de Paul es más conciso, siendo básicamente una actualización moderna de sus influencias musicales y literarias. Eso, en parte, le da un aspecto más oscuro a sus temas (sin perder cierta encantadora ironía, algo en lo que se parece a Robyn). Su estilo vocal también es diferente y recuerda más a David Tibet que al propio Robyn.

"Walter the Occultist" no es un tema perfecto. A veces me da la sensación (y creo que quizás vosotros también lo pensaréis) que es un tema de dos o dos minutos y medio alargado hasta los tres y medio de duración que realmente tiene. Es más un tema para revisitar en plan "coño, hace tiempo que no escucho ésta" que para escucharla varias veces a lo largo del día.

Pero no temáis. Es un tema cukito y encantador en cualquier situación. Su letra es evocadora a más no poder (al menos para mí). Musicalmente recuerda al Robyn Hitchcock más austero, sólo que con arreglos orquestales. Y los temas de Paul son ideales para escuchar leyendo tus libros de Valdemar Gótica. Hace de la lectura de M.R. James o de Algernon Blackwood una experiencia aún más cukita si cabe...
